When in a hospital or clinical setting there is a long list of steps that must be followed before giving medications. These are, and some sources quote more, known as the 9 Rights of Medication Administration.

When a medication is prescribed, these 9 steps must always be followed, no matter what (or legal action can be taken).

For example, when giving a blood pressure medication, a patient’s blood pressure must be taken before and after giving the medication. This is not always the case if it’s a STAT order.

In simple terms, a STAT order formally allows a healthcare employee to skip some of these steps.
